Radiohead video remix and ECA triumph at BAFTA Scotland New Talent Awards 2009

Glasgow artist James Houston was awarded for his take on Radiohead’s Nude at the BAFTA Scotland New Talent Awards tonight. Houston created an innovative remix of the Radiohead track using an old scanner, a dot matrix printer and other assorted vintage computer equipment. The video posted on YouTube has received 500,000 hits and was hailed as ‘brilliant’ by Radiohead’s Chris Greenwood. The clip was subsequently posted on the band’s official website and gained international attention.

Rose Leslie was awarded Best Acting Performance for her role in drama New Town, also starring Daniela Nardini. Other winners on the night included Kate Gabriel for best writing in BBC drama Fiona’s Story and Claire McLeod for directing Rare Breed Production’s Echo Wall.

Helen Anderson, Director of BAFTA Scotland said “BAFTA Scotland is delighted to showcase such a range of emerging talent from all across Scotland. It is especially important in the current climate that we support, commend and inspire excellence and the potential for excellence. My congratulations go to all the winners and nominees."

Leslie Finlay, Development Executive at Scottish Screen said: "Scottish Screen is delighted to be partnering with BAFTA and supporting the New Talent Awards, which play such an important role in showcasing and celebrating the next wave of Scotland’s screen talent. It is great that there is such a strong student showing in the nominations, and the quality of all the talent and projects on display here demonstrates that the future for Scotland’s screen industries is a bright one."

The awards also brought success to several students from Edinburgh College of Art.

Johanna Wagner, an MA Film & TV graduate of 2008, won in the ‘Factual’ category for her graduation film The Inner Shape. Johanna is still working with the College, making her next film with funding through the Bridging the Gap initiative organized by the Scottish Documentary Institute, based at ECA.

In the ‘Experimental’ category, current ECA exchange student Nelson Carlo de los Santos won the award for his film SheSaid HeWalks HeSaid SheWalks.

Anders Jedenfors, who graduated from the BA Film & TV programme in 2008, won best ‘New Work’ for his feature documentary Carlssons. This is the second BAFTA Award win for Anders in less than six months. In November 2008 he was awarded, along with fellow ECA graduate Jamie Stone, a BAFTA Scotland Award for their series of films The World According To….

Winners were announced at a ceremony at the RSAMD Concert Hall in Glasgow on Friday, 13th March 2009.
