As a lively and entertaining introduction to ceilidh dancing, Ready, Steady, Ceilidh will give great satisfaction to 5-year-olds and up, including their parents.

The short 40 minute show is structured around the mock rivalry of the MacReds and the MacYellows – clans allocated by sticker to the audience. There's even time for some name calling. Up on stage in front of the live band there are felt-boards with handy stick-on words for youngsters to come up and create the most revolting – and potty-level – insults available to the Scots language.

All great fun, but actual ceilidh dancing is still at the heart of the show. Fiddle, acoustic guitar and pipes drive the music, while jocular hosts lead each team and call the dances. Those who know will recognise the basics of the Dashing White Sergeant and other popular dances.

As the mock rivalry grows and dissipates, different moves are brought in, until a final hat dance, which neatly allows for pairs to mingle randomly and clingy children to let go of their parents legs. Pre-school children will find a better introduction elsewhere, but the banter and format of this make it a great start for those whose primary school doesn't teach them the steps.
