Catch some live performances and support your local record store this April

Since its inception in 2008, Record Store Day has been something of a phenomenon in the UK. Each year in April, music aficionados queue outside their favourite record stores hoping to purchase limited edition vinyl from their favourite artists. This year, on Sat 13 Apr, the hot ticket items include righteous punk-band IDLES early EPs pressed for the first time, alternative recordings of Fleetwood Mac's 1975 self-titled album along with new music from the likes of Courtney Barnett and Erykah Badu (who has teamed up with James Poyser and Thundercat to cover Squeeze!).
Along with the special stock, record stores also offer one-off events, with live music and DJs soundtracking the one-day party. We round up the goings-on in Glasgow and Edinburgh for this year, check with individual shops for opening times and lists of stock.

Glasgow

In Glasgow, music fans have a veritable feast of activities to sample, with at least four stores offering live events. In the East End, the legendary Monorail Music (housed within Mono Café) offers a diverse menu of live sets, with Rise Kagona (the guitarist from The Bhundu Boys), Adele Bethel's Lead Sister, south-side pop group Wet Look, two-piece punk project Bratakus and a set from Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert, who will be doing a mini tour of Scotland for Record Store Day. There will also be DJ sets throughout the day from Claire Biddles, Stewart Smith and Tom Crossley.

Further south, Some Great Reward will be working with the Glad Café, with 22-year-old folk musician Annie Booth, synth-poppers Pocket Knife and spikey rock project Home Economics, along with DJ sets throughout. In the city centre, Love Music will have Greenock indie-folk project Fallen Arches, an acoustic set from Glasvegas, a jazzy show from Tom Maguire and the Brassholes, The Beat Poets, rockabilly from Bikini Bottoms, horror punk group The Brothel Corpse Trio and indie guitar from The Hector Collectors. For those in the West End, Mixed Up Records on Otago Lane will have DJs throughout the day and special deals on regular stock.

Edinburgh

On the other side of the country, there is a similarly strong showing from record stores across the city. At Underground Solu'shn on Cockburn Street, we have a 'punk funkin' acoustic set' from Boots for Dancing, abstract pop from Sanna and delicate guitar from Bell Lungs, alongside a raft of DJs which include Eugene Reynolds from The Rezillos and BBC Radio Scotland's Vic Galloway.

VoxBox Music will be taking over St Vincent's Chapel with a whole host of live music. Featuring the spectral music of SHHE, poet Michael Pedersen, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Wasylyk, a solo set from Y'all is Fantasy Island, Lost Map's Callum Easter, rock three-piece Miracle Glass Company, folk guitarist Burnt Paw, Annie Booth and a visit from Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert. Assai Records will have DJs throughout the day, and will be offering breakfast rolls for those who queue early (vegan options included!).
