So last night didn’t quite work out as planned. It was a toss-up between Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant or the Comrade Couture documentary, showing in Glasgow’s hippest warehouse, SWG3. Much as I’m keen to see Nic Cage getting his crazy on, I decided the latter option could be pretty interesting, so made my way off the beaten track of Glasgow’s West End to seek it out. SWG3 is a very cool place – while lots of venues falsely call themselves ‘hidden gems’ when they’re actually in the heart of a city, it’s really true of this place – located down a dead-end street with only a tiny sign next to the door to identify it, the venue immediately gives an event a very unique feeling. Unfortunately, last night’s screening was beset with technical problems, and despite the promising surroundings I lacked the patience to stick with it. So for all I know it may have turned into the greatest night anyone has experienced ever, but it didn’t feel like it was going that way. Were you there? Was it any good? Anyway, earlier in the day I had a much better experience, seeing the central film of GFF’s Out of the Past strand – a lovingly restored print of the James Mason/Ava Gardner classic Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. The first word that comes to mind with this movie is lush, but that doesn’t in any way do it justice. It’s an amazingly gorgeous and intensely romantic film experience, and thanks to Park Circus – the company who recently restored and re-released The Godfather – it’s going to be back for a proper run in UK cinemas in May. Believe me, if you thought Avatar was doing something new with its ‘immersive’ imagery then you need to check out this Pandora and think again.

As the festival moves into the closing weekend there is a ton of great stuff to look forward to, including Kick-Ass author Mark Millar in person and the return of FrightFest. Sadly I am having to miss some of it, so am temporarily entrusting this blog into the hands of The List’s film editor, Mr Paul Dale. He’s known for his strong opinions, so things may take a turn for the vicious – don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’ll be back for the grand finale, with coverage of the Gregory’s Girl reunion screening on Sunday, and of course the Closing Gala and party. Until then, enjoy the movies!
