Reuben Kaye: Live And Intimidating comedy review – He won’t back down

Live And Intimidating begins as the audience filters into the room. Reuben Kaye struts around, dressed all in black with a face full of make-up and sparkly heels that make him tower over most of his crowd. But there’s nothing intimidating about it, as he welcomes his throng personally, flirting with and hugging various audience members. Once he gets up on stage, the gags come thick and fast, with few targets spared. From Airbnb hosts to Israel, and from Trump to Christianity, this is a politically-charged hour full of filthy jokes and with no holds barred.

The crux of it all is the homophobic response to a religious joke he made on Australian TV, and how queer people are being silenced all around the globe. But Kaye isn’t about to back down any time soon as this whirlwind performance attests to. There are just four songs in the whole hour which is a real shame as Kaye has a cracking set of pipes. While it’s an unevenly paced cabaret, there’s no denying that this is a whole lot of fun. It’s clear that he has a devoted following, and surely a few new members have joined the cult of Kaye after this performance.
