Though the number may be unlucky for some, the 13th Wickerman Festival – Dumfries and Galloway’s pocket sized answer to Glastonbury – saw the annual event’s success continue, attracting bigger names than ever before and taking its place as one of Scotland’s main musical events.

Friday’s headliner Dizzee Rascal gave a dynamic performance, drawing out a great energy from the crowd, culminating in fireworks and a sea of ticker tape to the tune of ‘Bonkers’. Before that, Rick Witter and the gang were reliving their mid-nineties hey-day on the main ‘Summerisle’ stage. Yep, that’s right – Shed 7 are back on the road and touring! The sing-along reaction to tunes like ‘Chasing Rainbows' and ‘Disco Down’ is surely testament to the staying-power of what are now considered ‘golden oldies’. And, as if that nostalgia trip wasn’t enough, 90s Glasgow band, Del Amitri took to the stage as Saturday’s headliners with a selection of vintage crowd-pleasers. This served as a perfect prelude to the annual Burning of The Wickerman, where a 40ft wicker man is set alight at the stroke of midnight. To celebrate the festival’s partnership with Homecoming Scotland 2014, this year’s wicker man stood high above the arena in a gravity defying, highland dancer’s pose, resplendent in a woven wicker kilt.

The focus on Scotland didn’t stop there, as the goNORTH Festival Tour tent was comprised of emerging home-grown talent. Glasgow rockers Schnarff Schnarff were followed by girl group TeenCanteen’s peppy blend of lively pop, with Saturday’s goNORTH line-up concluded by masked electro trio Roman Nose’s dark synthed-up beats.

An eclectic line up to say the least, and for a small festival, there’s a lot packed in. The relaxed, chilled out atmosphere is super family-friendly, but if you’re the type who wants to party all night the dance and reggae tents are blasting tunes ‘til 5am.
