Rocky Stallone comedy review: A knockout performance

The Rocky franchise is lovingly sucker-punched with a full Fringe makeover in Rocky Stallone, a solo comedy that leans into its source material with gloriously ridiculous confidence. Fans of the films will clock the references immediately, but even before the first bell rings it’s clear this show knows exactly the kind of fun it wants to have.

The script is genuinely clever, peppered with boxing puns that land like quick jabs throughout the evening. Sam Dugmore keeps the pace brisk, firing off jokes and audience volleys with the confidence of someone who knows how to work a room. The presentation is intentionally staged, relying on stripped-back theatrical elements that somehow still manage to keep the crowd in rapture right through to the final knockout.

The show taps into that cult nostalgia while also weaving in some cheeky, timely nods to American news and pop culture. One of the more pleasant surprises is the crowd it attracts. Large groups of men filling the seats at a Fringe clown show is not something you see every day and the atmosphere in the room reflects it: rowdy, engaged, and clearly enjoying the ride.

As a solo performance, it’s a strong effort. Carrying an entire parody of such an iconic franchise on your own shoulders is no easy feat, yet Dugmore keeps the punches coming with energy, quick interactions, and a sense of playful silliness that never takes itself too seriously. The climactic boxing match is showcased with real finesse; proof that even the most gloriously ridiculous premise can land when the performance commits fully.

That said, if you have absolutely no idea about the Rocky universe, a few moments may leave you on the ropes as the show definitely assumes a little familiarity with the cult franchise. But if you’ve got even a passing knowledge of Rocky Balboa and his cinematic world, you’re likely to have a great time. Rocky Stallone is fun, silly, and packed with clever touches; a Fringe parody that knows its audience and delivers the goods.

Rocky Stallone continues at Ukiyo at Gluttony until March 22.
