You might not have noticed, but Edinburgh saw remarkably little rainfall the past month. In fact, Midlothian produced a mere 20% of the average rainfall for April, and anyone who's been running the city's trails can attest to this given how clean their runners are. Just sayin'. With that in mind, huge optimism greets the return of Edinburgh International Film Festival's outdoor cinema programme to St Andrew Square Garden in June.

Film Fest in the City 2017 boasts an exciting lineup of new blockbusters, classics and family favourites, with the standout film being Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The event runs Fri 16–Sun 18 June, and screenings are completely free. Seriously, how good is that?

Critically acclaimed animation Kubo and the Two Strings and EIFF 2016 Audience Award Winner Hunt for the Wilderpeople (which is amazing, btw) are the main new films in the programme, but there's plenty of real crowd-pleasing classics to enjoy to. 'Dance-along' (go on, you know you want to) screenings of Mamma Mia and Dirty Dancing are in association with Dance Base, while Singin' in the Rain (let's hope not), Clueless and Labyrinth guarantee a good time. Families especially will want to get down for Trolls, Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Jungle Book. Finally, Avengers Assemble (that's the first one) screens, just to feed the Avengers-mania currently consuming the city.
