Rose Matafeo: On And On And On comedy review – Deep secrets and abrupt finales
Edinburgh Comedy Award victor skips back to the Fringe with winning observations and poignant monologues

This curly-haired Kiwi comic returns to Edinburgh in a deservedly bigger venue than she’s accustomed to, opening up her comedy hour with a minute of unserious and below-par breakdancing (deserving of an Olympic medal). It’s clear the creator of Starstruck knows how to craft a comedy. Famously hating endings, Matafeo shares with us a very, very, very long note from her notes app. This thesis-length spiel of her deepest secrets, best (and worst) ideas, and diary entries may go on and on and on. But her show is so full of laughs, and her storytelling so inviting, that it feels no time at all before the comic and her backpack are skipping out of the room.
Her stand-up is bursting with funny and relatable observations and stories, from judging strangers for using paper notepads to pouring her heart out to her geezer cleaner. Hilarious stories of unsuccessful relationships and her journey with a money-grabbing self-improvement scheme are mixed in with some poetic and poignant monologues which introduce new dimensions to Matafeo’s set. While an abrupt finale to the performance (like she told us before, she hates endings), Matafeo’s comedy is endlessly enjoyable.
Rose Matafeo: On And On And On, Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 August, 5.30pm.
