Sam Jay: We The People comedy review – Strident opinions
Some smart observations and funny anecdotes are interrupted with rants and opinions

A comedian who can make their audience feel like they’re part of a private conversation is usually a compliment. But unfortunately, much of Sam Jay’s Fringe hour feels like being stuck on the bus next to a painfully chatty person with questionable opinions. The American comic takes several swipes at today’s ‘labels-obsessed’ youth, confessing that she ‘doesn’t get’ the concept of non-binary people: ‘Prince was non-binary because he ‘fucked guys and wore tights’ is more or less her punchline here, which (along with not making a great deal of sense) came across more like a personal opinion than a joke.
As a black lesbian American, Sam does make some smart observations about current affairs in the US, along with genuinely funny anecdotes about the opposite lives of NYC queers and the bull-wrangling cowboys of Texas. But most of her hour is taken up by her various rants, and she closes with a joke about white women’s vaginas looking ‘uncooked’ and ‘needing to be put back on the grill’. While punching down in the social hierarchy, criticising women’s genitals would again make more sense coming from a strange character on the bus than a stand-up show.
Sam Jay: We The People, Pleasance Courtyard, until 24 August, 7pm.
