Just as you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, in Edinburgh during August you shouldn't judge an event by its venue – which is maybe why certain shows, screenings and club nights have decided to keep their locations shrouded in mystery. These site-specific happenings either lead trusting audiences to an unknown locale before the metaphorical curtain rises or wait until you've purchased a ticket before revealing the destination.

Sirenia
The latest work by Jethro Compton is set in an isolated lighthouse in the sea off Cornwall. Isaac is under threat from a fierce storm when the demons of his past begin to emerge from the darkness. Sirenia blends Celtic folklore with a modern tale of love, loss and solitude. Performed in a site-specific location against the Edinburgh skyline, capacity is extremely limited.

Guru Dudu's Silent Disco
Who knows where you'll end up on this silent disco meets walking tour? Everyone wears the headphones provided so they can enjoy Guru Dudu's commentary as well as a mix of dance tunes from the 70s to the noughties. Bust out some interpretive dance moves at local landmarks and help bring spontaneous flash mobs to the streets of Edinburgh.

The Warehouse
A late-night party with very limited capacity in a secret location in the centre of Edinburgh: it's never been used before, and never will again. As well as mystery, there'll be DJs from the capital's club nights, a 5am licence, sound and light installations and state-of-the-art visuals.

Hula House
Set in a brothel, this intimate show by Permanently Visible Productions blends performance with verbatim multimedia gathered from sex workers. The company aim to challenge societal ideas of selling sex and reveal the real women behind the stereotype. Meet at Zoo Southside box office for 10-minute walk to the venue.

The HandleBards: Secret Shakespeare
Actors and cycle enthusiasts the HandleBards invite their audiences to get on their bikes before pedalling together to a secret location for a Shakespearean performance. The bards play all the parts and use their bikes to power various surprises and contraptions 'on-stage'. If you don't fancy heading to the secret location, you can also see them perform Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Botanics.

Moonlight Cinema Tour: Secret Cinemas
Enjoy the silver screen by the light of the moon in an intimate garden in the heart of Edinburgh. Films shown include The Wolf of Wall Street, Pretty Woman and The Hangover. Moonlight Cinema are also bringing the snacks with street food, classic cinema refreshments and drinks available on site.
