Shamilton! The Improvised Hip-Hop Musical comedy review – In the room where a one-off happens
Giving improv a wonderful name is this troupe of talents who quite simply make it up on the spot

It took Lin-Manuel Miranda a year to write ‘My Shot’, one of the most popular songs from his hit musical Hamilton. Perhaps he should have asked the folks from Baby Wants Candy to lend him a hand, given they can knock a tune out in three minutes. To be fair, nothing in this fun improvised show comes close to the masterful music and lyrics crafted by Miranda’s fair hand, but their songs are still very clever and great fun.
As with Baby Wants Candy’s other shows, the starting point is audience suggestions. Choose wisely, we’re told, because we’ll be spending a whole hour hearing about whoever we select. On this occasion, the crowd was split between Paddington Bear and Arnold Schwarzenegger. And although Paddington won out, the cast kindly brought Arnie in as a subsidiary character so everyone got their way.
As each show is completely different, Shamilton! is tricky to describe but those who have seen Hamilton will recognise the beige outfits worn by this ensemble cast. The opening number is deeply reminiscent of ‘Alexander Hamilton’, except here, our hero steps forward and says ‘my name is Paddington Bear’. An imaginative, if sometimes ridiculous tale follows, all made up on the spot, and peppered with hilarious rhyming songs that are right on target. Squeezing in references to the original musical where they can (well, Paddington is a refugee from Peru who ‘gets the job done’, after all), the hugely talented cast of six actors/singers and two musicians feel like a safe pair of hands from the off.
