AROUND TOWN

Celebrate the sunniest season with Big Summer Spectacular (Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 June) which sees City Park in Stirling play host to a festival featuring a monster truck show, fairground, meet and greets with dinosaurs and Transformers, birds of prey displays, and music from the likes of Bay City Rollers, and Stevie McCrorie and Freya Nicoll from The Voice.

Bag an ethical bargain at Out Of The Blue Drill Hall’s June Flea Market (Saturday 28 June). Browse 45+ stalls at this Edinburgh arts institution, with pre-loved items ranging from clothes and jewellery to books, antiques and collectibles.

In Perth, they’ll be putting on a show in North Inch Park for their annual celebration of world music, dance and culture, Perth Mela Festival (Sunday 29 June). Enjoy a parade, live music and dance, a mela market and street food vendors offering a taste of India, China and more.

Japanese Breakfast

Fronted by Michelle Zauner, Grammy-nominated American indie poppers Japanese Breakfast (Monday 30 June) will be swinging by Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom to give you a taste of their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women).

Now 20 albums in, The Brian Jonestown Massacre (Friday 27 June) have been the subject of a documentary (2004’s Dig!) and are notorious for their tumultuous antics, particularly those of their frontman and founder, Anton Newcombe. Join in with the chaos when they rock up at Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange.

At The Queen’s Hall, they’ll be playing host to Kid Creole & The Coconuts (Saturday 28 June), aka August Darnell and co, who are on their farewell tour, playing their popular mix of disco, funk and Latin.

Susan Riddell

Catch the best in female comedy talent at Glasgow’s The Stand with this month’s edition of their regular show Material, Girl (Sunday 29 June), hosted by Susan Riddell and Amanda Dwyer. Featuring Gita Blaze, Alana Malone and more.

Bringing top-tier comedy talent to Perth’s Scone Palace, Patter At The Palace (Friday 27 – Sunday 29 June) is a three-day comedy festival promising non-stop laughter alongside mouth-watering street food. It features Russell Kane, Jim Smith, Ed Byrne and Dylan Moran, alongside some lesser known but equally funny names.

A cult Scottish film becomes a mischievous stage production in Restless Natives: The Musical (until Saturday 28 June) which makes its way to King’s Theatre, Glasgow this week, and once again follows the antics of Highland highwaymen Ronnie and Will.

SCREEN

F1: The Movie

Racing into cinemas this week, F1: The Movie stars Brad Pitt as a Formula One legend who returns from retirement to mentor a petrolhead prodigy. Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski directs, with Javier Bardem, Damson Idris and dozens of real-life F1 figures providing the support.

With its urgent stories of environmental injustice, the UK Green Film Festival (until Friday 4 July) is back, with Glasgow Film Theatre hosting screenings of two films from its programme this week, Searching For Amani and As The Tide Comes In.

Delivering one movie marathon to rule them all, this weekend Edinburgh’s Cameo will treat Middle Earth fans to back-to-back screenings of all three films in Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy (Sunday 29 June).

PODCASTS

Back for its fourth series and promising to offer absolutely nothing that the first three didn’t, From The Oasthouse: The Alan Partridge Podcast returns to Audible on Monday for more musings from one of the most fascinating men in North Norfolk.

In Marianna In Conspiracyland 2 disinformation specialist Marianna Spring investigates the impact of anti-medicine influencers and the sad case of Paloma Shemirani, a young woman who rejected chemotherapy after being diagnosed with an aggressive but treatable form of lymphoma.

Fresh out of prison, convicted cocaine smuggler TJ Dominguez tells his stranger-than-fiction story to Johnathan Walton in podcast Cocaine Air, describing his double life as a Lamborghini dealer and Pablo Escobar drug runner.

Pride At The Burrell!

Glasgow’s Burrell Collection is the setting for Pride At The Burrell! (Saturday 28 June), which uncovers LGBTQ+ stories from across the collection and features talks and tours alongside music, dance, family fun and more.

Opening this weekend at Glasgow’s Reid Gallery, Victoria Morton – Switch Track (Friday 27 June – Saturday 9 August) showcases selected works from the artist, bringing together sketchbook materials, paintings and mixed-media works across a 30-year period.

And finally, showing this weekend only at Dundee Contemporary Arts, Mothers Who Make: Responding Through Art (Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 June) is a display of artwork created by local mothers in response to DCA Galleries exhibition, Acts Of Creation: On Art And Motherhood.
