AROUND TOWN

We're putting on a show ourselves this Friday with a comedy special of our ListLive series (pictured above), featuring a litany of up-and-coming comics in a cool venue. With hosting duties from Robin Grainger, the night will feature LGBTQ+ New Comedian Of The Year semi-finalist Eva Peroni, BBC New Comedy Shortlisted Alan Jay, self-professed ‘wee idiot’ Kim Blythe, and Zara Gladman, who’s been selling out shows thanks to her chirpy musical comedy and sharply observed characters like Glasgow West End Mum.

Ethical shoppers and craft lovers should hotfoot it down to Edinburgh’s Out Of The Blue Drill Hall this weekend where The Urban Market (Saturday 10 May) will be bringing together a carefully curated collection of the best artists, makers, independent retailers and vintage dealers.

Over at Glasgow’s SEC they’re hosting the Homebuilding & Renovating Show (Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 May) where you can get plenty of inspiration and expert advice on your domestic projects, big or small.

While Perth Museum are exploring the iconic Shakespeare play in all its forms alongside the history that inspired it in Macbeth: An Exhibition (until Sunday 31 August).

MUSIC

Bradley Simpson

The former frontman of The Vamps, Bradley Simpson (Sunday 11 May), struck out on his own last year, releasing album The Panic Years. Check out his solo stuff when he rocks up at Glasgow’s SWG3.

Dublin-based indie rockers Search Results (Saturday 10 May) will be swinging by Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s this weekend, ahead of the release of their latest album, Go Mutant, later this month.

At Edinburgh’s Leith Depot they’re providing a platform for fledgling talent with another edition of Support Your Scene (Sunday 11 May), an open mic night and networking event which helps young people get what they want from their local music scene, chat to industry professionals and make connections for collaboration.

STAGE

Dance International Glasgow

Bringing dozens of dazzling live performances to Tramway and other venues this spring, Dance International Glasgow (Friday 9 – Saturday 24 May) features Scottish talent alongside artists from all over the world, with film screenings, outdoor events and a family programme, as well as some spectacular stage shows.

Fringe smash …Earnest? (Friday 9 & Saturday 10 May) is about to take a bow in London’s West End but you can catch it before then when it hits Glasgow’s King’s Theatre. For fans of The Play That Goes Wrong, this interactive show gets audience members up on stage when a production of the Oscar Wilde classic is plunged into crisis.

Meanwhile, Canadian comedy sensation Katherine Ryan (Friday 9 May) is back out on tour with her new show Battleaxe, which combines an acerbic stand-up set with her playing comedy agony aunt. Check it out at the SEC Armadillo, Glasgow.

SCREEN

The Surfer

In The Surfer Nicolas Cage turns in another high voltage performance as a man who returns to Australia after living in the States, and falls foul of some aggressive surfer dudes who drive him out of his mind. This well-conceived and executed trip is the brainchild of Irish filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium).

Wrapping up this weekend at Dundee Contemporary Arts is Dundead Film Festival (until Sunday 11 May), featuring premieres of For Night Will Come and The Gesuidouz and screenings of horror classics like Black SundaySuspiria and closing film Demons.

And Edinburgh’s Cameo is the setting for Ali Plumb’s Untitled Film Quiz Project (Saturday 10 May), a fun, quirky twist on the usual film trivia, hosted by Radio 1’s movie buff.

PODCASTS

New this week and widely available is Pete Wicks: Man Made in which the Strictly and TOWIE star bares his soul as he discusses what makes a good man, with the likes of Tom Grennan, Billy Billingham, Olly Alexander, Caitlin Moran and Vicky Pattison.

VISUAL ARTS

Solange Pessoa Pilgrim Fields

Kicking off this week at Edinburgh’s Summerhall is Feeling You By Fleur And Henri (Thursday 8 – Sunday 18 May), an interactive exhibition from Fleur Darkin and Henri Meadows, which invites engagement through a series of somatic puzzles which playfully explore physical presence.

While opening at Glasgow’s Tramway is Solange Pessoa – Pilgrim Fields (Saturday 10 May – Monday 22 September), a major new show by one of Brazil’s best living sculptors, consisting of large-scale works made from ceramic, bronze and Hebridean fleece.

And finally, Your Art World (Saturday 10 May – Sunday 2 November) is an exhibition of work from children and young people across Scotland – from groups who have made inspiring installations with the support of a team of artists, to individuals who have responded to an open call to share their art with the world.
