AROUND TOWN

Horror Con Scotland

Bag yourself a vintage bargain as B’s Vintage Market (Sunday 22 September) heads back to Edinburgh’s Out of the Blue Drill Hall this weekend with its autumn edition. Get prepped for the coming cooler months while shopping ethically, with the café serving food and drinks throughout for essential refuelling.

It’s the final weekend of Perth Museum’s Unicorn exhibition and The Last Gallop (Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 September) brings the whole family together to help see it out in style, from storytelling and crafts to live music, and don’t forget to check out the exhibition itself.

At the other end of the suitability spectrum, Glasgow’s SEC will play host to the first edition of Horror Con Scotland (Saturday 21 September), featuring on-stage entertainment, movie screenings, a marketplace, and meet-and-greets with film favourites and authors.

MUSIC

Ryan Adams

An 80s icon best known for his time with Soft Cell, Marc Almond (Saturday 21 September) will be reimagining some classics as he promotes his new covers album, ‘I’m Not Anyone’, and celebrates his 45th year in music at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

Also heading to Usher Hall this weekend is American singer-songwriter Ryan Adams (Sunday 22 September), who will be playing songs from across his back catalogue in intimate, acoustic fashion, just him and his guitar and piano.

As part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival (Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 September), Kelvingrove Bandstand and Amphitheatre will be hosting a free weekend of live music, with bookable backstage tours taking place on both days.

STAGE

Fern Brady

Direct from the West End, the winner of four Olivier Awards Come From Away (until Saturday 21 September) has been winning over Edinburgh Playhouse audiences this week with its stirring musical take on a remarkable true story. Catch it while you can.

One of the biggest names in Scottish comedy, Fern Brady (Saturday 21 September) is back out on tour with her latest show, I Gave You Milk To Drink. Tickets are still available for her second night at Glasgow’s King’s Theatre, so why not snap some up.

Also making ‘em laugh this weekend, first at The Stand in Glasgow, then at its sister venue in Edinburgh, is rising star Kane Brown (Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 September), who's telling audiences Don’t Listen To Me.

SCREEN

The Substance

Provocative body horror The Substance combines outré effects with a sensational idea, and gifts Demi Moore the role of her career. Moore plays a fading actress and fitness star who, in a desperate bid for reinvention, creates a younger, troublesome version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley. It’s the brainchild of Revenge director Coralie Fargeat.

Set in the Himalayan foothills, Girls Will Be Girls is a fresh and taboo-busting coming-of-ager from Shuchi Talati. It features a formidable performance from first-time actor Preeti Panigrahi playing a brainiac student who has her head turned by a new peer.

Based on a true story, The Goldman Case is an intense and compelling courtroom drama from French director Cédric Kahn (Roberto Succo), following a charismatic far-left militant accused of murdering two women during an armed robbery, who very vocally insists he’s innocent.

PODCASTS

Joanne McNally

New podcast Joanne McNally Investigates: Did Furbys Spy On Us? features the Taskmaster favourite on another tongue-in-cheek mission, as she looks into bizarre claims that the popular toy was capable of spying.

Starry new audio drama series Central Intelligence brings together Kim Cattrall, Ed Harris and Johnny Flynn to tell the inside story of the CIA from the perspective of Eloise Page (Cattrall), who would go on to become one of its most powerful women.

And there’s more hidden history in Empire City: The Untold Story Of The NYPD in which Peabody Award-winning host Chenjerai Kumanyika takes listeners on a journey exploring how the largest police force in the world came about.

VISUAL ART

This week marks the return of the Edinburgh Art Fair (Friday 20 – Sunday 22 September) at the O2 Academy, an event showcasing a wide range of artworks from up-and-comers to household names, with prices to suit everyone.

Billed as a festival for curious minds and daring spirits, Sonica (until Sunday 29 September) brings together more than 100 visual and sonic artists for live performances and installations, many of which are free to attend. Events take place across Glasgow.

And finally, Parallels II (until Sunday 29 September) at Edinburgh’s Coburg House Art Studios is the second instalment in a group exhibition featuring five talented artists working across jewellery, fine art and illustration. Find out where they are now, one year after they first came together.
