AROUND TOWN

Part of Black History Month Scotland, Amy Rich and Lucien Staddon Foster will take you on an illuminating journey through Glasgow’s mercantile past in their Glasgow Black History Walking Tour (Sunday 12 October). It’s just one of many such events taking place this month.

With Glasgow wrapping up its own celebration of tasty tipples, the focus now shifts to other cities. Edinburgh Cocktail Week (until Sunday 12 October) is still going strong and Dundee Cocktail Week (until Sunday 19 October) kicks off this weekend.

In St Andrews, Cambo Gardens will be hosting the very wholesome-sounding Woodland Celebration Day (Saturday 11 October), a tribute to all things autumnal. Featuring free fruit trees, apple pressing, plant and bulb sales, and the launch of a seasonal trail.

MUSIC

Chloe Foy

Combining folk, synth, spoken word and guitar fuzz, Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter, aka Stick In The Wheel (Friday 10 October), have been making music since 2013, reworking centuries-old songs and infusing them with contemporary relevance. Check them out when they swing by Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s this weekend.

While the city’s Mash House will be playing host to high-energy pop rockers The Hot Damn (Saturday 11 October), an all-female quartet promising catchy tunes and bags of attitude as they play songs from their debut album, Dancing On The Milky Way, and more.

At Glasgow’s SWG3, singer-songwriter Chloe Foy (Sunday 12 October) will be treating music lovers to the sweet sounds of her second album, Complete Fool, rock-tinged folk merged with strings and layered vocals, which embraces the bittersweetness of life.

STAGE

Grayson Perry: Are You Good?

Flick & Pie Go Fishing (Monday 13 – Saturday 18 October) is a new comedy from Laila Noble in which a seemingly perfect relationship is put to the test. Catch it at Òran Mór, Glasgow.

At Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre Black Hole Sign (until Saturday 18 October) is set in an understaffed A&E department and written by critical care nurse Uma Nada-Rajah. It explores changing attitudes towards a once beloved institution.

In Grayson Perry: Are You Good? (Sunday 12 October) the iconic artist and national treasure pulls back the curtain to see where the audience’s morals lie in a fun and silly exploration of virtuousness which will swing by the King’s Theatre, Glasgow as part of a national tour.

SCREEN

I Swear

The funny and heartfelt story of trailblazing Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson, I Swear stars the remarkable Robert Aramayo in a performance sure to put the actor firmly on the map. Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Peter Mullan provide sterling support.

Wrapping up the Robert Redford Season, the Filmhouse’s tribute to the late, great actor, check out screenings of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (Thursday 9 October) and Ordinary People (Friday 10 October).

We gave it five stars back in 2014 and, although it didn’t go on to do much commercially, The Guest (Friday 10 October) really is worth checking out when it returns to Edinburgh's Cameo this weekend. Hilarious, sexy, action-packed and sinister, it’s the film in which star Dan Stevens shook off Downton Abbey for good.

PODCAST

Getting all revved up for its favourite season of the year, Uncanny: Halloween Countdown has been delivering bite-sized tales of terror. Told by regular presenter Danny Robins, it’s a spooky advent calendar of sorts before unleashing a feast of fear on Halloween itself.

Hosted by political commentators Jemma Forte and Marina Purkiss, in The Trawl the pair sift through tweets, headlines and soundbites with smart takes, humour and some swearing, taking you from the world of Westminster to global affairs.

In new podcast Pottering With Tom Allen the delightfully camp comedian will invite celebrity friends into his garden. Expect chats with the likes of Rob Beckett, Phil Wang, Nish Kumar, Jo Brand, Kerry Godliman and more.

VISUAL ART

EXPOS3D

Setting up its stalls at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre, HARVEST: Contemporary Craft Fair (Saturday 11 – Sunday 19 October) is a substantial celebration of Scottish contemporary craft, featuring more than 1000 items designed and made in Scotland by 80 makers.

For EXPOS3D (Sunday 12 – Saturday 18 October), an innovative exhibition from artist Trevor Jones, Edinburgh’s Custom House is transformed into an immersive art experience, merging painting, stained glass, sculpture, AI and augmented reality.

And finally, Glasgow’s Tramway is the setting for an exhibition of interactive artworks and resources created by Leap Then Look dubbed Play Interact Explore (until Monday 11 May), a lovely, curiosity-filled space designed to encourage visitors to take part in playful exploration.
