The UK Pipe Band Championships roll into Edinburgh, plus a trio of contemporary artists grace Modern One, and Horrible Histories comes to Glasgow

AROUND TOWN
The longest-running craft beer festival in Scotland’s sunniest city, Dundee Brew Fest (Saturday 12 July) is back for its fourth instalment at a brand new location, the 71 Brewing Brewery. Expect a variety of craft beer, cider, spirits and fizz options, with street food, DJs and acoustic entertainment all adding to the atmosphere.
If you’re looking for something a bit gentler this weekend then head on down to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, where you can explore hidden treasures and learn all about their plant collection on a Daily Guided Walk, taking place at 11am and 2pm.
While the city’s Royal Highland Centre will be playing host to a popular musical competition when the UK Pipe Band Championships (Saturday 12 July) return. Featuring world-class piping, drum major displays, family entertainment, trade stands, and food and drink.
MUSIC

Edinburgh's Voodoo Rooms is hosting the fantastically monikered Miranda Sex Garden (Friday 11 July), an ethereal, ever-evolving group who supported Blur and Nick Cave back in their heyday.
Known for both his hard-hitting lyrics and collaborations with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sandé, rapper Mic Righteous (Friday 11 July) is one of the most well-respected MCs on the scene. You can check him out in Glasgow this weekend when he headlines SWG3’s Poetry Club.
If you caught Charli XCX at Glastonbury and are preparing for another Brat summer then The Liquid Room’s Brat Rave (Saturday 12 July) will be right up your street. It’s a high-voltage Edinburgh club night featuring hyperpop, indie-sleaze, edgy remixes and more.
STAGE

Sure to delight adults and kids alike, touring show Horrible Histories – Terrible Tudors (until Saturday 12 July) brings some heinous historical figures back to life. Hear all about Henry VIII, his many wives and punch up with the Pope, along with Bloody Mary and the Spanish Armada. Catch it when it anchors down at the Theatre Royal Glasgow.
Known for the Here Comes The Guillotine podcast he hosts with Frankie Boyle and Susie McCabe, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd (Sunday 13 July) will be trying out new material in a work-in-progress, catch-it-here-first show at Edinburgh’s Monkey Barrel Comedy.
Glasgow’s Southside comedy festival, Laugh In The Park (Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 July) is back this weekend at the city’s Queen’s Park Arena with a line-up featuring Des Clarke, Darren Connell, JoJo Sutherland and Amanda Dwyer.
SCREEN

Celebrate the release of the Baron Of Blood’s latest body horror The Shrouds by delving into the Canadian auteur’s back catalogue as part of Glasgow Film Theatre’s Cinemasters: David Cronenberg (until Wednesday 30 July) season. Videodrome is available to watch this weekend.
Guardians Of The Galaxy’s James Gunn offers his own inimitable spin on the Man Of Steel in Superman. This fun and politically savvy film stars David Corenswet as the titular hero, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
If you’re looking for something cute to watch with or without the kids, then Edinburgh’s recently reopened Filmhouse has the perfect option as part of their Wee Filmhouse series with the Oscar-nominated and adorable Marcel The Shell With Shoes On (Sunday 13 July).
PODCASTS

From the makers of The News Agents, The Crime Agents features Neil Basu, the former head of UK counter-terrorism policing, and Andy Hughes, LBC’s crime correspondent, joining forces to take an expert look at the crime-themed stories hitting the headlines.
In Mistresses, Dr Kate Lister and Jameela Jamil take a delicious dive into the scandalous stories of notorious ‘other women’, including Madame de Montespan, Marita Lorenz and Mary Boleyn.
In Shadow World: The Grave Robbers award-winning investigative journalist Sue Mitchell looks into an Eastern European crime group forging wills in order to steal the homes of the dead.
VISUAL ART

In ARTIST ROOMS (from Saturday 12 July), check out the work of three of the biggest names in contemporary art at Edinburgh’s Modern One, with striking displays from Louise Bourgeois, Helen Chadwick and Robert Mapplethorpe, including the former’s giant Spider.
Glasgow’s SWG3 is hosting the seventh edition of Art Car Boot Sale (Sunday 13 July), Scotland’s biggest contemporary art market, with street food vendors and DJs along for the ride.
And finally, Edinburgh’s Royal Scottish Academy have a new exhibition of work from master printmaker Paul Furneaux (until Sunday 27 July), who draws inspiration from the colours, shapes and textures of both Scottish and Japanese landscapes.
