AROUND TOWN

Pittencrief Park in Dunfermline is the setting for Fife’s first ever Afro-Caribbean Summer Festival (Saturday 5 July), a sizzling celebration of Caribbean music, food, dance and fashion, featuring all of the above plus a kids’ zone, arts & crafts and more.

Over at Tramway and The Hidden Gardens, they’re hosting this year’s Glasgow Zine Fest (Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 July), a weekend of zines, climate justice, activism and creativity. Get stuck into hands-on workshops, shop ‘til you drop at the zine fair, and enjoy passionate discussions.

With the event itself just around the corner, join retired journalist and amateur historian Mike Lewis to hear about The Origins Of The Edinburgh Festival (Friday 4 July) at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre.

MUSIC

Mike McKenzie

Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s is the setting for a show from award-winning indie-pop artist Mike McKenzie (Friday 4 July), who will be showcasing songs from his debut album, I’d Wait Again, as part of a UK tour.

Glasgow’s SWG3 will be throwing a Scottish House & Disco Summer Garden Party (Saturday 5 July), with music from Danny Krivit, Greg Wilson and The Reflex guaranteed to get you sweating on the dance floor.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh institution The Voodoo Rooms will be welcoming North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Dawn Landes (Saturday 5 July), whose songs have appeared in the likes of Gossip Girl and The Good Wife, and who will be playing material from her new folk album, The Liberated Woman’s Songbook.

Glasgow’s Blackfriars Of Bell Street has a stacked array of comic talent trying out new material in its basement this weekend. There are sets from Amanda Dwyer, Tamsyn Kelly, Ayo Adenekan, Marc Jennings, Kate Hammer and Larry Dean (Friday 4 – Sunday 6 July).

The Nottingham Playhouse production of the multi-award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen (until Saturday 5 July) is on tour and swinging by Edinburgh Playhouse this week. It follows the anxious Evan as he struggles with a secret following the suicide of a schoolmate.

Bard In The Botanics is back! Taking place at Glasgow Botanic Gardens, this year’s line-up includes live outdoor performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Doctor Faustus (until Saturday 2 August), which are available to check out this week.

SCREEN

Jurassic World Rebirth

Yes it’s the seventh film in the franchise but Jurassic World Rebirth freshens things up with a brand new cast fronted by Scarlett Johansson and double Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, and adds in a director who really knows what he’s doing, in the shape of Monsters and Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards.

Back from the dead following a successful crowdfunding campaign, Edinburgh’s recently reopened Filmhouse brings you the best recent releases this weekend, with the likes of 28 Years LaterThe Ballad Of Wallis Island and The Phoenician Scheme, alongside a 40th anniversary screening of Ran, and a 70mm print of the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.

At the city’s Cameo, they’ll be revisiting Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Final Cut, screening ahead of Eleanor Coppola’s Hearts Of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (Friday 4 – Sunday 6 July) which documents the film’s tumultuous production.

Reese Witherspoon, Reese's Bookclub

Turning the history of the CIA into a gripping drama, Central Intelligence returns for a second series. Told from the inside by Kim Cattrall’s long-serving agent Eloise Page, it also stars Ed Harris, Johnny Flynn and Kelly Marie Tran.

Hosted by Danielle Robay, Bookmarked By Reese’s Book Club is a new reading podcast that dives into Reese’s Book Club picks, interviewing authors, discussing themes and encouraging plenty of listener engagement.

With the Women’s Euros having just kicked off, The Guardian Women’s Football Weekly will be covering the competition, with hosts Faye Curruthers and Suzanne Wrack joined by guests from across the footballing world.

Doug Crocker: Threads

Border Crossings: Ten Scottish Masters Of Modern Art at Dundee’s McManus spotlights ten pioneering Scottish artists whose talents place them amongst the greats of global art. Featuring work by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Robert Colquhoun and William Crozier.

In Doug Cocker: Threads (until Saturday 19 July) one of Scotland’s leading sculptors unveils a body of new, wooden work at Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios, in collaboration with The Scottish Gallery.

And finally, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are offering a Spill The Tea Tour (Sunday 6 July) with a guided tour of the subversive, plant-themed exhibition Linder: Danger Came Smiling, led by a member of their creative programmes team and including a chance to sample a nice cup of herbal tea.
