Boasting action both on the river and on dry land, Glasgow’s Clydebuilt Festival (Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 September) invites you to set sail or try your hand at activities like outdoor survival skills, traditional crafts and building techniques. Or you can take it easy and browse the handmade products at Clydebuilt Market.

MUSIC

Ash / Summer Sundays

Glasgow’s Freakender Festival (Friday 6 – Sunday 8 September) is back at The Old Hairdressers and it’s bigger and better than ever. Choose from more than 20 live acts from across the musical spectrum, including Nightshift, Bikini Body, Curtis Miles, The Hanging Stars and Ryan Sambol.

STAGE

John Bishop

One of the biggest names in stand-up brings his new show to Dunfermline’s Alhambra in John Bishop: Back At It (Saturday 7 September). Hear what’s new with the laugh-inducing Liverpudlian as he returns to the stage after a couple of years out of the touring game.

Meanwhile, over at Glasgow’s Oran Mor they’ll be hosting Kiri Pritchard-McLean (Sunday 8 September), the five-time Chortle-winning comedian and co-creator of hit podcast All Killa No Filla, who will be talking about life as a foster parent.

If you’re looking for something more family friendly then King’s Theatre, Glasgow have a scrumptious new stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (until Sunday 8 September) starring Wicked’s Adam Garcia, and Rab C Nesbitt’s Elaine C Smith as the Childcatcher.

SCREEN

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

It’s been a whopping 36 years since Tim Burton’s original but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice resurrects the bio-exorcist and undead troublemaker, played again quite marvellously by Michael Keaton. Jenna Ortega, star of Wednesday, is an apt addition to a cast that includes returning stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara.

On a limited theatrical run before heading to Netflix in a couple of weeks, His Three Daughters is a sensational platform for three extraordinary actors. Azazel Jacobs brings together Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen as a trio of very different sisters caring for their dying dad.

Mystery drama series The Perfect Couple has just dropped on Netflix. This adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s book stars Nicole Kidman as a novelist matriarch tangling with her soon-to-be daughter-in-law (played by Eve Hewson), with a body on the beach further complicating matters. Dakota Fanning and Liev Schreiber co-star.

PODCASTS

In Mo Gilligan: Beginning, Middle & End the loveable comedian will be sitting down with a selection of celebs to find out how they got started, what they’re doing now and the legacy they’d like to leave. Check out his chats with Jonathan Ross and ShxtsNGigs.

Popular true crime podcast Bad People returns with weekly episodes discussing the terrible things people do and why. Hosted by criminal psychologist Dr Julia Shaw and true crime documentary maker Amber Haque.
