AROUND TOWN

In collaboration with Stockbridge Social, craft beer favourites Innis & Gunn are hosting a fun 5k run, appropriately titled the Innis & Runn (Saturday 6 September). After pounding the scenic streets of Stockbridge, Edinburgh, you’ll receive a refreshing pint at the finish line with live entertainment to follow.

Dundee’s Canvas on Ure Street will be hosting The Yard Market (Friday 5 & Saturday 6 September), a local staple featuring creatives and makers from across Scotland, as well as street food, charity and community groups.

There will be games aplenty at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre this weekend when Tabletop Scotland (Friday 5 – Sunday 7 September) sets up its stalls. This board, card and roleplaying game convention is open to both newbies and seasoned players, with merchandise, exhibitors and opportunities to get stuck into some gaming action. 

MUSIC

Blondshell

Heading to Glasgow this weekend to promote her second album is alt-rock artist Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell (Saturday 6 September). The New York-raised, California-based Ticketmaster Breakthrough Artist will be bringing her confessional, grunge-inspired sounds to Queen Margaret Union.

Meanwhile, SWG3’s The Poetry Club will be playing host to upcoming indie crooner Tyler Ballgame (Saturday 6 September), who has recently signed to Rough Trade Records. After impressing at festival dates in the UK, the American singer will soon be heading back to the US to continue his tour.

At Edinburgh’s Sneaky Pete’s, Aussie singer-songwriter Jack Botts (Saturday 6 September) will be swinging by as part of his European tour. He’ll be treating the audience to tracks from his recent Home Days EP, his debut album, Sucker For Sunsets, and more.

Wallace

Wrapping up this weekend in Dunfermline, the small but perfectly-formed Outwith Festival (until Sunday 7 September) brings together theatre, music, film, art and design, books and kids entertainment.

Fans of iconic lunchtime theatre experience A Play, A Pie And A Pint should check out their latest offering, Wallace (until Saturday 6 September), a musical from Rob Drummond and Dave Hook which promises a bold spin on the legend of Braveheart. Catch it at Glasgow’s Oran Mor.

Making ‘em laugh at Edinburgh’s The Stand is He Huang (Tuesday 9 September), a blessed product of China’s one-child policy who will be discussing dating fails, travel disasters and more.

Funeral Parade Of Roses

The ninth and apparently final instalment of the Conjuring Universe, [The Conjuring: Last Rites] is based on the infamous Smurl Haunting. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as paranormal investigators the Warrens, with series regular Michael Chaves directing.

If you’re looking for something a little different in Edinburgh then the Leith Kino film collective are launching their new weekly film night with 1969 Japanese gem Funeral Parade Of Roses (Sunday 7 September) which follows the gender-nonconforming hostesses of a Tokyo gay bar.

Year-long tribute David Lynch’s Dream Theatre continues this weekend at Edinburgh’s Cameo with screenings of ‘Lynchspiration’ Vertigo and Lynch classic Lost Highway (Saturday 6 September).

PODCASTS

Busted’s Matt Willis is your host for popular mental health podcast On The Mend in which he chats to those who have hit rock bottom and made it out the other side, including Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan Stephens and former trader Gary Stevenson, with Matt opening up about his own addiction and fear of failure in the process.

Hosted by Gemma Cairney, Factory International podcast Dream Space returns for season three, opening with an interview with none other than visionary artist Marina Abramović, who will be imagining redesigning the world from scratch.

Following on from their quest to get to the bottom of the baffling world of political language, Strong Message Here, Helen Lewis and Armando Iannucci continue their partnership in Strong Recommend, where they offer cultural recommendations, from theatre to film, novels and TV.

VISUAL ART

Collective Gala

Edinburgh’s Collective will be celebrating art, place and people at their Collective Gala (Sunday 7 September) which combines newly commissioned artworks, tours, talks, creative play sessions, live music and a procession.

In family-friendly drop-in workshop Messy Masterpieces (Saturday 6 September) at Edinburgh’s City Art Centre you’ll be able to reimagine classical Scottish artworks using pastels and adopting an abstract expressionist style.

And finally, closing soon at the city’s Portrait Gallery is The World Of King James VI & I (until Sunday 14 September), a journey through the complex life of a king telling his story through paintings, jewels and designs which display the rich craft and visual art from the 16th and 17th Centuries.
