AROUND TOWN

Edinburgh’s friendly, community run Meadows Festival (Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 June) is back this weekend. It will be celebrating its 50th anniversary with a fabulous line-up of live music, the city’s largest outdoor market, family and wellbeing zones, a dog show, greyhound parade and more.

There’s much to marvel at as Glasgow Science Festival (until Sunday 15 June) returns with a packed programme featuring hundreds of events across the city over ten eye-opening days. Choose from films, shows, workshops, tours, exhibitions and activities for all ages.

Here to tantalise your taste buds, Meatopia On-Fire (Friday 6 – Sunday 8 June) is a live-fire food fest first staged in New York and attracting chefs from all over the world. The mouthwatering menu is served up alongside cool drinks to a soundtrack of banging bands and DJs. Fill your boots at Glasgow’s SWG3.

MUSIC

Waxahatchee

Rocking up at the city’s Barrowland Ballrooms is Waxahatchee (Sunday 8 June), the prestigious indie project from US singer-songwriter Kathryn Crutchfield. Expect tracks from their most recent, Grammy-nominated album, Tigers Blood, and more.

Over at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall, AMPLIFI (Sunday 8 June), now in its fifth season, showcases the sounds of modern Scotland with artists handpicked by We Are Here Scotland. Featuring rising Afrobeats artist Pillz The Energizer, AKA Prince and Ayisha.

STAGE

Caitlin Cook

Offering an innovative, contemporary spin on King Lear, Ramesh Meyyappan’s LEAR (until Saturday 7 June) touches on themes of madness, loss of power, betrayal and trust. Catch it at Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a laugh, LA-born comic Caitlin Cook will be hitting Edinburgh’s Monkey Barrel Comedy with her one-woman bathroom graffiti musical, The Writing On The Stall.

While over at Glasgow’s Oran Mor, the latest from A Play, A Pie and A Pint is another musical, this time about two best friends who are pushed to the edge by a viral meme in the appropriately titled Meme Girls (until Saturday 7 June) from Andy McGregor.

SCREEN

Falling Into Place

A refreshing antidote to cheesy romcoms, Falling Into Place is a satisfyingly knotty love story, set partly on the Isle Of Skye. It’s the directorial debut of German actress Aylin Tezel, who casts herself alongside Outlander’s Chris Fulton.

At Glasgow Film Theatre, their ongoing CineMasters strand celebrates two marvellous movie Michaels this month, Michael Haneke and Michael Mann, with screenings of The Piano TeacherHeat and Funny Games for starters.

Part of Picturehouse’s year-long David Lynch’s Dream Theatre season, Edinburgh’s Cameo brings the director’s pioneering TV show Twin Peaks to the big screen. Kick off your latest obsession or revisit a favourite this week, beginning with episodes one and two, as Special Agent Dale Cooper tries to solve the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.

PODCASTS

Best mates Tom Grennan and Roman Kemp join forces for some podcast fun in You About?, an unfiltered chat featuring lots of laughs and a lack of boundaries.

In Wrong Turns With Jameela Jamil the actress and activist gathers her funniest friends to share mortifying stories of embarrassment without accompanying moral lessons. Joining her are the likes of Mae Martin, Jake Johnson and Bob The Drag Queen.

The Intersect With Cory Corrine sees the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist delve into what it means to be human in our increasingly tech-heavy world.

VISUAL ART

Mayflies: Swarm

A unique artistic experience is on offer for a limited time only in Mayflies: Swarm (Saturday 7 – Thursday 19 June). This immersive installation consists of thousands of hand-cut paper mayflies arranged in Edinburgh’s Barnton Bunker, which was originally built as part of Britain’s defences during WWII.

Potfest Scotland (Friday 6 – Sunday 8 June) sees the popular ceramics exhibition rock up at Scone Palace for the weekend. Soak up the stunning surroundings, chat to artists and buy from them directly.

And finally, closing this weekend is a pair of exhibitions at Edinburgh’s National Gallery, Glasgow Boys | Drawings And Watercolours & The Glasgow Girls (until Sunday 8 June) which bring together works by influential artists, including James Guthrie, EA Walton, Annie French, Jessie M King and Olive Carleton Smyth.
