Sophie Santos . . . Is Codependent comedy review: Charming but not silly enough
A pleasant enough hour that doesn’t quite know where it wants to go

Tracing her journey from codependent romantic to the independent comedian she is today, Sophie Santos delivers an endearing one-woman show that sits somewhere between silliness and sincerity. Sadly it never fully commits to either. Even though it’s not the most original story, the hour is well plotted, and Santos is a winning presence who ensures the audience is rooting for her every step of the way.

The conceit of her OCD as an antagonist she must learn to accept is neat enough, but she never really delves into how this related to her codependency, thus robbing power from her emotional arc. Throughout, she breaks into musical numbers, none of which are particularly memorable even if they do showcase those skills.
What they do demonstrate, along with some off-the-cuff remarks, is Santos’ more ridiculous side. These moments are quickly abandoned, however, in favour of the overarching story. Ultimately, Santos is a charming presence and a good writer, but if she allowed the sillier jokes some space to breathe, or indeed gave more depth to the saccharine elements, it could all have landed much better.
Sophie Santos . . . Is Codependent, Underbelly Bristo Square, until 28 August, 7pm.
