Sophie Sucks Face comedy review: Musical fun straddles taboos
Delivering a character so full of delusions is risky and risqué but Zucker’s inordinate skill makes it pay off

The Daily Show’s Sophie Zucker brings us a one-woman musical where the entire plot is based around her hooking up with a second-cousin. At her grandfather’s funeral. While she had a boyfriend. The Jewish comedian’s production not only tells this worryingly funny story but paints a picture of a lost twentysomething who refuses to be pinned down by societal expectations and taboos.

Zucker delivers a delusional character that has a simultaneous need to be adored by everyone and sabotage anything that goes well for her. Her American-Bridget-Jones-on-drugs schtick is relentlessly entertaining; a ukulele number on how making bad decisions is actually cute, quirky and ‘twee’ (she blames Zooey Deschanel) is one highlight of a genius soundtrack, which she of course made available on Spotify.
The actress makes it her mission to seduce her cousin (who also happens to be an Israeli soldier at the heart of the Israel/Palestine conflict) at the next family gathering. She obsesses over her newfound crush, forgetting her boyfriend at home while her risqué subject matter could easily have been an uncomfortable flop for audiences. But Zucker’s expert packaging of an over-confident (and arguably unhinged) young woman who’s always on the hunt for the next thrill makes her story a treat to watch.
