Sophie’s Surprise 29th circus review: Briefs has a rival
Acrobatics, roller-skating and aerial are given daring fresh twists for this birthday bash

There’s a rather large surprise in store for ‘Sophie’ at this 90s-party themed circus show, for which the word ‘raucous’ could well have been invented. It’s got a similar vibe to Briefs, with performers milling around as we enter, up to mischief, offering us crisps, painting our faces. Then the fun really begins. This is Three-Legged-Race’s debut show, but make no mistake, they are all acrobats at the top of their game, and what you see here is outstanding circus.

We’re lucky to have an embarrassment of circus riches at the Fringe but what sets this show apart is its irresistibly ridiculous sense of humour. You might have seen aerial straps before, but probably not set to Nirvana and followed by a reading of Twilight erotic fan-fiction. There’s a roller-skating duo that recalls the Skating Willers tearing up La Clique in the noughties, but did the Willers ever retrieve a blue WKD with their mouths mid-spin? ‘Dealer’ Sam Goodburn is a phenomenal clown and Isis Clegg-Vinell is surely the most fearless performer at the Fringe. The show does have a bit of a 90s attitude to audience consent but go with a party spirit and it will be a birthday (certainly for ‘Sophie’) to remember.
Sophie’s Surprise 29th, Underbelly Circus Hub, until 26 August, 9.45pm.
