Splat comedy review: Mixed-bill magic

By their very nature, late-night line-up shows are difficult to review. Different guests pop in each night and the success of each evening is very much about the attitude of the audience, which can range from fringe-fatigued to, well, possibly more than gently refreshed. If it’s hard to write about, it’s also hard to get right and the few long-running late-nighters at Adelaide Fringe tend to flourish in year-round venues who know their audiences and their acts. More power to them, but there’s also a new kid in town that’s rather fun.

Splat brings together the weirder and wonderfuller edges of the comedy spectrum. Expect clowns (Jeromaia Detto and Poppy Mee both on fine form); characters (the always brilliant Lauren Brady as SWAN); and oddball stand-up (Emma Holland slays). The brainchild of Ben Volchok and Mel McGlensey (who also share hosting duties) with resident Conk (you do not want to see what that lad can do with a bunch of grapes), Splat runs Friday and Saturday night only. Check socials for guests, be prepared to leave your worldly wearies at the door (laughing like a drain at Andrea Barello’s shaving cream antics will do that for you) and get ready to splat.

Splat, The Courtyard Of Curiosities At The Migration Museum, Friday 28 February & Saturday 1 March; Friday 7 & Saturday 8 March, 11.30pm.
