St Doctor’s Hospital comedy review: Making it up on the spot
The Free Association go full adlib with a single audience prompt in an attempt to create improv gold

Whether your comfort watch is Grey’s Anatomy, ER, House or good old Casualty (Charlie forever), there’s no doubting the impact of hospital dramas on our collective consciousness. St Doctor’s Hospital plays into that with an hour of improvised comedy squarely aimed at those armchair medics whose viewing has convinced them they know one end of a crash cart from another; after all, who hasn’t pressed a hopefully inquisitive ear against the on-call room door when visiting granny after her bunion op?

Six performers cram into a tiny room, ready to save lives through the power of laughter. Completely improvised, the show relies on performers’ quick wits and improv skills to bring the funny, based on a single prompt conversation with an audience member at the beginning. This can be either a blessing or a curse: a random start sees the cast spiralling as they work hard to mine a less and less fruitful seam. Clearly they’re staying faithful to the episodic format of our beloved medical shows, but a quick cut and reboot might serve them better. Still, it’s silly enough fun to keep everyone involved for an hour.
St Doctor’s Hospital, Assembly George Square Studios, until 28 August, 3.15pm.
