A man of seemingly modest ambitions, Stuart Goldsmith once hoped that he would have a nice car, get a decent job and not die before he’d had sex. The friends he grew up with in Leamington Spa may appear to have everything (and more) that the comic might once have dreamed of possessing but for them, he is the one that’s living the dream. Goldsmith partly scoffs at such empty grass-is-greener rhetoric, but you do sense that he does feel a little bit blessed to be in a position to entertain people: why else would he have ‘former street performer’ on his CV if he wasn’t a person who would do literally anything to make people happy.

Now, the comedian once described as ‘blandly handsome’ just wants to avoid having imaginary conversations with feathered friends while driving alone across the country to and from gigs. With Extra Life, Goldsmith is keeping half an eye on his biological timer, musing over being a father one day (reasonably soon, please) while speculating on what it must be like at the other end of the age scale; his really very old grandmother refuses to peg it no matter how many times he delivers his last goodbye.

Goldsmith’s story is undoubtedly sprinkled with a fair amount of filler concerning the modern state of shopping and dating. But it all ends on a high note which might even leave those of a sensitive disposition wiping away a tiny tear as his ideas come together with one delightful final flourish.
