Suchandrika Chakrabarti: Doomscrolling comedy review – Scatterbrained hour from a former journalist
An uneven hour of politics for preschoolers

Suchandrika Chakrabarti describes herself as a ‘professional doomscroller’. She was, after all, a journalist working in newsrooms for 12 years. She says the point of the show is to teach her five-year-old niece about the world around her, and for that reason some of the political takes remain on a fairly superficial level. We get an insight into Chakrabarti's character; she’s scatterbrained, but passionate about the world around her. Unfortunately, this passion doesn’t always translate itself into a coherent comedy show. She playfully uses a few props to talk about her favourite headlines of the past few years but there’s no real narrative arc to the set. Furthermore, some of the news stories discussed feel a bit dated. A talking Suella Braverman wig feels stale considering she’s no longer in power and her policies aren’t being enacted. As Chakrabarti mentions in her show: politics moves quickly.
Chakrabarti would make a good radio presenter but this set feels under-rehearsed and as if she’s stretching out only ten minutes of actual material into a full-length show. She’s fun company for an hour but her comedy act needs some development.
Suchandrika Chakrabarti: Doomscrolling, Hoots at Potterow, until 25 August, 3pm.
