Tale Of The Firebird is an acrobatic explosion of musical skill, daring feats and hugely addictive atmosphere. A fairytale depicting the legend of a phoenix rising from the ashes, created and performed by The Freestyle Orchestra, it is a riveting piece of theatre that reimagines what can be achieved on stage.
A versatile group of dancers, musicians, fire artists and acrobats from Australia master multiple talents at a time to convey the story. As the audience are stunned by flames and contortion, every scenario pushes the state of excitement further. Musical instruments rise into the air and bodies slink together in unity, creating shapes that further the narrative and allow a story of conflict and victory to emerge. Beautifully balanced, the lighting effects are almost as impressive as the stunts, but the coordination of the cast is exemplary as they listen intently to each note and leap into their next movement in unison.
While the costumes don’t add much to the overall performance, there is a magnificent artistic quality to the show. A few tiny missteps and an elongated violin solo aside, the wealth of talent on display is undeniable. Unexpectedly arresting and packed full of surprises, this combination of orchestral storytelling feels immersive and enduring. Combining fire, acrobatics and musicality, often at the same time, it is a marvel of modern musical theatre that will stay with you long after the smoke has cleared.
