Estampas Porteñas have returned to the Fringe to show the flatfooted dance lovers of Edinburgh how to tango Argentinean style. The very title Tango Fire suggests an hour of smouldering sensuality. I took a fan and a plentiful supply of cold beverages . . .

The dance is undoubtedly technically accomplished, the performers displaying incredible precision as they wind their limbs at high speed into various sensuous poses. But there’s a woeful lack of variety to a show that could have showcased the breadth of Tango styles. That Tango Fire comprises mainly of traditional, crowd-pleasing dances is forgivable, but the performers themselves display a lack of emotion that makes the whole thing seem a bit stiff and formal, and may leave the audience a bit cold.

Happily, each dance demonstration is broken up with a set from La Quartedo Tango, the piano, bandoneon, fiddle and bass combo performing with the gland-snapping brio that’s conspicuously lacking from the dance. (Allan Radcliffe)
