The Alchemy Experiment: Exciting new exhibition and events space reopens its doors
Glasgow's latest creative hub and coffee shop will act as a showcase for all forms of contemporary art
Launched in October 2020 with its Love in the Time of Covid lockdown art show, The Alchemy Experiment is an innovative, inclusive exhibition and events space and coffee house on Byres Road, that looks set to become a staple of the Glasgow art scene.
It has recently reopened to the public, in a welcoming and reassuringly Covid-safe way, inviting local artist Mark Worst to paint a mural to mark the occasion, based on their open call theme, 'Love & Chaos'. The result can only be fully appreciated in person; it's a vivid and impactful creation that embraces Worst's own diverse influences (including Akira and Delacroix), whilst cementing Alchemy as home to cutting-edge creatives.
Spread across two floors, this light, stylish, stripped-back and easily adaptable space will play host to art exhibitions, talks, workshops, film screenings, live music, tuition, poetry and more. Its intention is to provide a place for artists and creatives to not only showcase their work, but to collaborate and connect to Glasgow's art scene.
With Mark Worst leading the way with his eye-catching mural, Alchemy recently put out an open call for art based on the wide-ranging brief 'Love & Chaos'. Artists are invited to submit up to three images using any medium, visual or text based, and are encouraged to take the theme in any direction they wish. The submission deadline is the end of this month – midnight on Mon 31 May – and you can apply via their website. Several of the chosen works will appear in a curated physical exhibition under the same title, opening in October this year, while a publication showcasing the range of submissions will be created and released to coincide with the exhibition.
The Alchemy Experiment is proud to bang the drum for inclusivity and seeks to encourage all forms of art. In order to support emerging and underrepresented artists and groups – and provide them with a continuous platform – they have created The Alchemy Creative Fund. This is an ongoing open fund, paid for by donations and shows, with the funding facilitating the use of the space and covering various artistic costs. Applications are open to all Scotland-based artists, creative agencies and organisations, though disadvantaged and marginalised groups will be prioritised due to the fund's inclusivity and diversity remit. Anyone is welcome to donate to the fund.
Testament to Alchemy's commitment to innovating, championing different artforms and mixing things up, they hosted a pre-recorded DJ event earlier this month in collaboration with Panther Milk, which drew on local talent, including headliner Domenic Cappello – a legend of the electronic dance scene. The space was converted into a club, with 3D visuals courtesy of Sean Zelle and production design by Nanni-Pa & Rok agency. To get a flavour of the event, individual sets are available to watch via the venue's YouTube channel.
The Alchemy Experiment is open from Monday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Booking is not required. Visit alchemyexperiment.com to find out more.
