The best of comedy at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Dylan Moran, Tim Key, Russell Kane, Jimmy Carr amongst stars

Dylan Moran

The first of three winners on this list of the big Edinburgh comedy award in its various guises shows that he’s no less grumpy on stage now as he was when he scooped the Perrier back in 1996.
Edinburgh Playhouse, 0844 871 3014, 15, 23 Aug, 8pm, £24.

Mick Miller & Jimmy Cricket

A one-night only affair for these two grand old chaps of the comedy business as some old-fashioned entertainment comes to the Fringe.
Pleasance Dome, 556 6550, 18 Aug, 8.20pm, £12 (£10).

Tim Key

Award-winner numero two joyfully brings back his Masterslut from last year, a show about a man, a bath and some warmly enjoyable graphics. A five-star treat 12 months ago, we expect nothing less this year, Mr Key.
Pleasance Dome, 556 6550, 16--21 Aug, 11.30pm, £14 (£12); Pleasance Courtyard, 556 6550, 23--25 Aug, 11.15pm, £14 (£12).

Russell Kane

And the most recent winner of the big Edinburgh prize shows that he’s still up for the battle with a decent-sized run of a Posturing Delivery. He’ll also be hopping over to the Book Festival and chatting about his debut novel, the busy boy.
Assembly Rooms, 0844 693 3008, 13--24 Aug, 9pm, £15 (£12).

Jimmy Carr

No rude shouting from the back about financial affairs ok? You know he’ll have his cutting barbs at the ready just in case.
EICC, 0844 847 1639, 16--18, 23--25 Aug, 9.20pm, £18.50.

Greg Proops

The Proopdog (does he still call himself that?) avails himself of the Fringe after quite a time away. Expect some gruff commentary about the state of the world and his place in it.
Assembly, George Square, 623 3030, 16--25 Aug, 6.15pm, £15--£16 (£13--£14).

Jerry Sadowitz

It’s possible that two of the acts above might get it in the neck from the New Jersey-born Scottish philosopher. Maybe more if we’re lucky. He’s doling out dangerous gags and hugely impressive card tricks this year.
Assembly Rooms, 0844 693 3008, 14--18 Aug, 12.30pm, £15.50; 17 & 18 Aug, 10.25pm, £17.50.
