As we continue our countdown of the year's top TV, here's another set of programmes including one drama with a very recent season finale that's still causing distress among its loyal fanbase

5) ZeroZeroZero
Starting off in a brutal and bleak fashion, the tone of this series based on the writings of Roberto Saviano (creator of Gomorrah) goes steadily downhill from here on in, ending on an image that should remain indelibly etched upon all those who witnessed it. The global cocaine trade is tracked from Monterrey to Mexico and stopping off on the Italian coast as three separate stories converge, delivered with a number of powerful sucker-punches.

4) Schmigadoon!
Was there a more joyous small-screen affair than this silly but seductive tale which was both a love letter to musical theatre's heritage and an amusingly snarky portrait of a couple (Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key) at odds with each other and the weird surroundings they suddenly find themselves in. Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming excel as characters in a small town where everyone bursts into highly choreographed song at the drop of a Stetson.

3) Mare Of Easttown
Not a single cliché is given the time of day in this US crime drama starring Kate Winslet as the local detective with a sad family past who is thrust into a murder investigation in her Pennsylvanian neighbourhood. Old wounds are continually cut open in this character-heavy ensemble piece with great turns from Winslet, Jean Smart and Guy Pearce.

2) Succession
If Kendall Roy's bravura act of sabotage at the end of Succession's second season dropped your jaw, this week's climax to the follow-up dealt characters and audience a devastating blow which only more episodes can salve. Jesse Armstrong will need to go some to top the perfect storm of betrayal and backstabbing that punctured his set of conflicted and dodgy personnel.
