The Pitt social hub officially opens in Granton
The community interest company completes its move across town to a new location overlooking the Firth Of Forth
Edinburgh’s The Pitt officially reopened this weekend at its new site on a former industrial unit by the shore in Granton. The community, enterprise and social hub originally opened in Pitt Street, Leith, where it operated from 2015 to 2022.
The venture was re-established last year as a not-for-profit community interest company. A Crowdfunder was launched in July which successfully raised £33,772, with every individual donation up to £250 matched by the Aviva Community Fund. The money was raised to fully equip enterprise units for use by street food traders, artists and retail entrepreneurs to kick-start their businesses and ideas. Around the same time, the Pitt team put on a number of taster events such as football screenings during the Euros.
To mark the official opening, 2,000 people descended on the site over the weekend, undeterred by yellow weather warnings courtesy of Storm Darragh. The new venue is double the size of the previous location, with a capacity of 700. As well as a permanent street food market, other facilities include heated indoor seating, community spaces and two saunas with views over the Firth Of Forth.
In our recent Hot 100, we honoured The Pitt's Navida Galbraith, praising her and her team's rapid conversion of 'the space from a warehouse complex into multi-arts venues, food and drink hotspot, and community hang-out.’
Hal Prescott, chief executive of the Granton Project which owns and operates The Pitt, said, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be open, and despite the storm attempting to throw a spanner in the works we’ve had thousands of people through the doors with initial feedback being fantastic. But this is very much the beginning of the journey for us, The Pitt isn’t a static space it will continue evolve with the community we’re part of and the community we build. We have so much more to come in the new year, so watch this space.’
