Bertolt Brecht wrote his comedy satire over three weeks in 1941 having fled to Finland and whilst awaiting entry documents to the US. An in-your-face parody of Hitler's power-grab, petty Chicago mobsters stand in for the dictator and his Nazi friends as we follow Ui's murderous ascent to dominance within the Windy City's grocery trade.

The play isn't the easiest to swallow, featuring a typically Brechtian scene montage with heavy-handed historical parallels signposted in blunt if blackly humorous fashion. The young actors of Braindead Theatre, from Surrey's Esher College, deliver a straight-arrow performance which, whilst it might not take risks, is full of pace and verve.
