The Sex Lives Of Puppets theatre review: Strings attached
Unusual examination of the intimate lives of puppets
It’s all in the name: this is a puppet show about sex. The premise is fairly simple, staged as a series of interviews with the puppets who appear on-stage either solo or in a couple. Each new segment is introduced by the performers holding up cardboard signs that ask questions like ‘What does sexual wellbeing mean?’ or ‘What’s your secret sauce?’ The puppets are astonishingly life-like, with ever-staring eyes that somehow manage to convey their personality, and they’re brought to life by the four performers operating and voicing them with incredible skill.
We meet Katie and her partner, Helen, who’s rediscovered her sexuality; brash financier Dimitri who uncovers his softer side with second wife, Robin; cheating Clive who tells his tale with haunted eyes; Marcus and Preston who live in a care home; and many more. Some of the puppet interviews are hilarious, some are touching, some are ridiculous and some are explicit. Some go on for slightly too long, and some of the gags are tighter than others. It won’t be for everyone but one thing’s for sure: this is an hour that’s quite unlike anything else you’ll see at the Fringe this year.
