The Sumo Show: Hirakuza circus review – A formidable bout
With wild matches and entertaining primers on the sumo tradition, this is a brilliant family show
‘Before the clash, there is a prayer.’ Hirakuza is as much an introduction to the centuries-old traditions surrounding sumo technique as it is a display of extraordinary strength. The host and wrestlers take us through rituals and techniques that make up Japan’s oldest combat sport from shiko leg-stomping and the purification of the ring to the various offensive, defensive and grappling forms. It is fascinating without ever feeling like a history lesson, helped enormously by an enthusiastic host who has the audience cheering, chanting and clapping.
And then come the matches. They may be short but they’re remarkably intense. Bodies collide with astonishing force as the wrestlers attempt to push, throw or manoeuvre one another from the ring, demonstrating how much technique sits behind all that power.
The wrestlers are formidable, commanding the stage without saying much at all. But as the show goes on, their sillier side emerges. Vibrant, energetic and genuinely informative, Hirakuza strikes the perfect balance between respecting the sumo’s traditions and making them accessible. Enormous fun and an unexpectedly brilliant family show.
