As Ike Sheldon, the Missouri-born lead singer and guitarist of the country four-piece The Wilders, likes to say, ‘you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.’ Sheldon’s got the hillbilly sound in him. He can’t shake it and he wouldn’t want to, although as he explains, his was a circuitous path away from his musical roots through rock, disco, hip hop, even opera and back again to a sound he grew up with. Sheldon’s first and last love, music-wise, remains the country storytellers such as Tom T Hall and The Statler Brothers. Together with his fellow band members, the former world music-loving hippies Betse, Phil and Nate, the goatee and Stetson-adorned Sheldon is bringing that beautiful foot-stompin’ honky-tonk ruckus all the way from his beloved Phillipsburg, Missouri. If you close you eyes, you might just be transported there.
