Things to do in Adelaide: our 48-hour whistle-stop tour

We've previewed boatloads of acts for 2023's edition of Adelaide Fringe, but what else is going on in South Australia's arts capital? Whether you’re popping into the city for a few days to enjoy the Adelaide Fringe, or simply fancy a short vacation, we’ve assembled these recommendations to ensure you have a pleasant trip. Below you'll find two recommendations for each section of the day so you can fill 48 hours with variety, enjoyment and luxury.
Cafe 228
First up, the most important meal of the day — breakfast. Opening at 6am every weekday, Argo on the Square has a menu teeming with breakfast options from vege stacks and omelettes to a mouth-watering keto salmon and egg bowl. It’s easy to find and always attracts a wide variety of people. Also giving you your caffeine fix for the day is Coffylosophy, a boutique café open from 7am daily, offering big breakfasts, great coffee and light bites.
Art Gallery of South Australia
Now that you’re fuelled up for the day, fill the morning’s itinerary with some chin-stroking culture. If you’re a first-timer in Adelaide, then a visit to the Art Gallery of South Australia is a must. Comprising over 45,000 works of art from Australia, Europe, North America and Asia, it’s also home to an important collection of Indigenous art and the only dedicated Islamic gallery space in Australia. If you’re more excited by outer space than visual art then MOD., located at the University of South Australia, will fire your neurons. This free exploration of science features technologically impressive explorations of seven purpose-built gallery spaces across two floors, so you can spend an entire day exploring the most exciting aspects of science and technology.
But back to our favourite topic, food. For a lunchtime to remember, we recommend Bread & Bone Wood Grill, a classily decked out eatery which specialises in wood-grilled meat and seafood. If you’re still full from breakfast then the lighter fare of Curiositeas Tea Room could be the ticket. Its menu of handmade scones and small sandwiches will keep you going without bursting your stomach.

After that, it’s time to shop till you drop. Adelaide is well-known for its vibrant retail spaces, and one of the most diverse is the Adelaide Central Market. This is a bustling space with a multitude of traders, including fruit & veg stalls, fishmongers, and butchers, alongside a host of family activities and live music acts on selected days. For a more fashion-focused experience, Rundle Mall should be your first port of call. Women’s and men’s fashion is well-catered to here, with brands like JD Sports, Uniqlo, H&M, Sephora and plenty more to help fill your luggage to bursting point.
For teatime, there’s 8020BK Thai Fusion, a (you guessed it) Thai fusion restaurant that’s become well-regarded for its seasonal menu. Its food is designed for sharing, so pop along with your partner and get ready to gorge. Known for its exemplary Italian dishes is Antica Pizzeria, a carb overload with finely cooked pasta, pizza, and more.
Fat Controller
With culinary riches lining your stomach, it’s time to enjoy some music. There are over 80 live music venues in Adelaide’s CBD, and the hippest include Jive, Fat Controller and the Lions Art Factory. Catering to indie house fans is the Rocket Bar, while cabaret aficionados can hit Nineteen Ten. This is the tip of the iceberg of Adelaide's live music scene, so don’t be afraid to explore while you’re there.
The day's almost done, so polish things off at a late-night watering hole. Alfred's Bar is open till late, offering decently priced booze and a darts board for late night games, while The Rosey will fix you a drink.
