Tip Of The Week: Louise Welsh

Tony Kushner’s Angels In America, set in the 1980s during the rise of the Reagan administration and the HIV and Aids epidemic, is not a period piece. Life, death, love and sex are enduring themes, as is homophobia, internalised and otherwise. Add lawyer Roy Cohn (Trump’s mentor), a gay man ruthless in hounding fellow gays during the Lavender Menace scare, and you have a play for our times. I haven’t been able to get the 2024 production of International Theater Amsterdam’s Oedipus out of my head so I’m nervously anticipating this epic five-hour production at the King’s Theatre.

Louise Welsh: The Cut Up, 18 August, 5pm; Celebrating Zoë Wicomb (with Chitra Ramaswamy), 25 August, 3.45pm; both events at Edinburgh Futures Institute; Angels In America, King’s Theatre, 15 & 16, 18 & 19 August, 6pm; 20 August, 1pm.
