In this hour-long therapy session, Tony Cantwell, star of the Irish version of Last One Laughing and hit podcast Young Hot Guys, comes over totes emosh: ‘This is gonna be a story-based show,’ he warns, ‘so some of it might not have a punchline or anything.’ He’s literally not joking. Delving into his past to recount bouts of crying, Cantwell promises ‘some sexy tangents’, you know, ‘like buff, bronzed males on the beach’, to keep the audience interested. Problem is, this shipwreck of a show constantly feels like it’s being phoned in from the seaside.

You Cry Weird is back-of-a-fag-packet stuff. Cantwell’s rambling, unstructured delivery does little to elevate a series of low-energy anecdotes: the time he blubbed on a high-speed treadmill, the meltdown when teased by a schoolmate, watching Bluey with his daughter. It does feel a little bit like he’s making it up as he goes along. The phrase ‘I was at this gaff party’ is repeated often, making you wonder if some of the material might sound better under the influence. He may have charisma in spades, but lazy stand-up of this sort feels like a real waste of talent from one of the Emerald Isle’s rising stars. There’s more to Ireland than this.
