Following on from their successful current exhibition Night Fever: Designing Club Culture (running until Sunday 9 January 2022) and the upcoming Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer (opening on Saturday 26 February 2022), Scotland's design museum V&A Dundee will be exploring what its director, Leonie Bell, describes as: 'two different but equally powerful areas of design.' Plastic and tartan will be the subjects of major exhibitions in late 2022 and 2023.

Plastic: Remaking Our World will run from Saturday 29 October 2022 to Sunday 5 February 2023. It charts the changing fortunes of a 150-year-old material, asking visitors to think afresh about its promise and problems and taking us from plastic's invention to its ubiquity – from its status as a magical material to plastic pollution becoming one of the world's most urgent issues. Featuring product design, graphics, architecture and fashion from the collections of the V&A and Vitra Design Museum as well as collections all over the world, this is the first exhibition co-produced by V&A Dundee, the Vitra Design Museum and MAAT, with consultant curators from V&A South Kensington.

The follow-up show, Tartan – taking place from Sunday 2 April to Sunday 3 September 2023 – is the first major exhibition curated by V&A Dundee, five years after its opening, with consultant curator Jonathan Faiers of the University of Southampton. It aims to take a radical new look at one of the world's best-known fabrics, highlighting its complex, rich and sometimes painful history, and the way it has showcased and subverted notions of Scottishness and traditions. Demonstrating how it has become a global symbol of unity and revolution, the exhibition will explore the impact the textile has had on design around the world from early examples right up to the present day.
