Viv Ford: New Kids On The Blockchain comedy review – Unengaging crypto show

To be fair, you’re probably not going to choose to see a show featuring cryptocurrency unless you have some interest in it but Viv Ford’s experience of living in a crypto castle in San Francisco, sadly, just isn’t that interesting. Ford, however, tells her story with conviction, the show is well performed and presented. She’s wryly funny as she tells of the over-crowded house share where crypto bros are sharing rooms in bunk beds. For those who might not have a clue about Bitcoin and other digital currencies there’s a brief jokey tutorial on how it works. Later, Ford breaks up the story with a Q&A. ‘Anyone got any questions?’ Folk are slow to ask but you can’t help but wonder: why would you have any burning questions? Ford touches on slightly more interesting territory about women being dismissed in a male world but they don’t really come to anything.

A chunk of the problem is that the characterisations of her housemates isn’t intriguing enough; they seem like arseholes but not big enough arseholes to be engaging. It’s also difficult to muster much empathy for Ford herself: young, recently graduated and a bit lost in this pit of testosterone. The show’s blurb tantalisingly hints at how she ‘discovers just how much she’s willing to compromise to become one of them’ but it doesn’t really come to anything other than a description of a slightly unusual house share she had in her 20s and a tutorial about how cryptocurrency works.
