The Funny or Die production features performances from Tim Robbins, Kristen Wiig and more
IFC have just released a bizarre sneak peak of the upcoming TV miniseries The Spoils of Babylon, which was directed and written by Saturday Night Live’s Matt Piedmont and produced by Will Ferrell's Funny or Die outfit.
The show, whose action takes place over the course of a century, seems to be an absurdist epic blending elements of neo-noir, Lynchian absurdism, prime time comedy, satire and classic Hollywood cinematography to mind boggling effect.
The story is based around a trio of characters: a wealthy oil tycoon (played by Tim Robbins) and his highly maladjusted children (Tobey Maguire and Kristen Wiig) who are set to inherit the family fortune once their father dies. Given the frequency with which A-listers pop up on Funny or Die, it's not wholly surprisingthat the supporting cast for The Spoils of Babylon features such names as Carey Mulligan, Jessica Alba, Michael Sheen, Haley Joel Osment, Val Kilmer and Steve Tom.
As the trailer makes blatantly obvious, this isn’t a show which intends to take itself as seriously as the material matter might call for, putting an offbeat twist on a tale of passion, deceit and family feuds. It appears to be shot through with enough idiosyncratic quotes and dead pan deliveries to keep you craving more that the six episodes currently promised.
The Spoils of Babylon looks hammier than an episode of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers directed by Tommy Wiseau, but could a cult classic be brewing on the shores of LA? Have a look at the trailer and judge for yourself.
The Spoils of Babylon will premiere in the US on Thu 9 Jan on IFC.
