The National Theatre at Home series continues this week with the broadcast of the highly acclaimed 2013 Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus, starring Tom Hiddleston in the title role. One of the last two tragedies written by Shakespeare, along with Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus is based on the life of the legendary Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus.

Tensions are high in Rome, as a famine threatens the city, causing unrest between the common people and the aristocrats. Caius Martius, son of Volumnia, in particular is despised for his open hatred of the lower classes. Meanwhile, at war with the neighbouring Volscians, Caius Martius leads the Roman army to success and is hailed a hero. But when he returns to Rome and the role of consul is offered to him by the Senate, he must deal with the angry voices and their desire for change directly, despite his contempt for their kind.

Josie Rourke (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) directs the company including Mark Gatiss, Hadley Fraser, Alfred Enoch and Deborah Findlay. Filmed live on stage at the Donmar Warehouse in 2014 by National Theatre Live, this production had a 12A rating when released in cinema and contains scenes featuring occasional gore and staged violence.

With theatres around the UK and beyond remaining closed as lockdown continues, companies and venues are doing their bit to keep audiences at home connected and entertained as best as possible. London's National Theatre announced their National Theatre at Home programme last month, giving audiences the weekly opportunity to enjoy world-class theatre while the venue is closed. And with huge numbers tuning in every week, the initiative has been a great success. So far, we've been treated to streams of One Man, Two Guvnors starring James Cordon, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, Twelfth Night, Frankenstein starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch, Antony & Cleopatra, starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo, Inua Williams' Barber Shop Chronicles, the Young Vic's production of A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Gillian Anderson, and most recently, James Graham's This House.
