The National Theatre at Home series continues this week with the broadcast of Alan Bennett's multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III.

Telling the true story of George III of Great Britain and his deteriorating mental health, the play follows the period around the Regency Crisis of 1788–89, and the scheming Prince of Wales' attempts to undermine the Crown as the King's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. Following its premiere on stage in 1991, the play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film starring Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren as King George and Queen Charlotte.

Produced by Nottingham Playhouse, this new production features Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance).

With theatres around the UK and beyond remaining closed as lockdown continues, companies and venues are doing their bit to keep audiences at home connected and entertained as best as possible. London's National Theatre announced their National Theatre at Home programme last month, giving audiences the weekly opportunity to enjoy world-class theatre while the venue is closed. And with huge numbers tuning in every week, the initiative has been a great success. So far, we've been treated to streams of One Man, Two Guvnors starring James Cordon, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, Twelfth Night, Frankenstein starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch, Antony & Cleopatra, starring Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo, Inua Williams' Barber Shop Chronicles, the Young Vic's production of A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Gillian Anderson, James Graham's This House, and most recently, Coriolanus, starring Tom Hiddleston.
