Watch trailer for Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck
First authorised film about the Nirvana singer features home movies and unreleased music
Having premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Montage of Heck has already been described as ‘the definitive Cobain documentary’.
It is the first authorised film about the lead singer of Nirvana, with Courtney Love and their daughter, Frances Bean, in the role of executive producers. Director Brett Morgen has been granted the kind of access to his subject that documentary filmmakers dream of and it’s taken him eight years to sort through the never-before-seen home videos, journals, photographs, artwork, unreleased music and songbooks.
The trailer is a revealing montage of personal paraphernalia, Cobain’s scrawling notes and personal drawings, mixed with clips of interviews with those closest to the singer including Courtney Love and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, though Dave Grohl is notably absent.
Set to ‘All Apologies’ and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ the trailer captures the high octane energy and reckless abandon of Nirvana’s live performances contrasted with the intimate domesticy of his home life with his young wife and baby daughter.
Morgen further excited fans of the singer when he revealed that the documentary will include Cobain's previously unreleased music, including an unheard 12-minute acoustic track as part of the film score.
Montage of Heck will be released in the UK on Fri 10 Apr
