Watch trailer for Netflix's Nina Simone documentary
Sundance doc What Happened, Miss Simone? to premiere in 26 June
The hits keep coming from Netflix as the online distribution site continues to expand its empire into the realm of production. As well as critically acclaimed original TV series (House of Cards, Daredevil), Netflix has been buying and investing in documentaries, the latest of which is the striking What Happened, Miss Simone?.
Directed by Academy Award nomined filmmaker Liz Garbus (Bobby Fischer Against the World), What Happened, Miss Simone? made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film, made in cooperation with the estate of Nina Simone, looks like an incredible insight into the life, the artistry and the demons of the singer whose combination of talent and personality has rarely been matched. Her voice, though, remains a one of a kind.
The trailer plays up the mystery behind this resoundingly loved musician as classic tracks like 'Don't Let Me Me Misunderstood' and 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' play over footage of 60s civil rights movement marches, archive interviews with Simone and talking heads, including her daughter.
Definitely one to pencil into your viewing calendar along with Orange is the New Black Season 3, which premieres 12 June.
What Happened, Miss Simone? premieres 26 Jun on Netflix across all territories.
