YUCK Circus dance review: Funny feminist circus
This all-female team put on a phenomenal show of skill

The blessed Taylor Swift teaches us that we should never have to apologise for our excitement, which is excellent because there is so damn much to get excited about at YUCK Circus. Fast, funny, female, fierce with phenomenal skills, it’s a total blast from start to finish. It’s also a bit of a wake-up call to just how much hegemony of body types, skills and styles there is in both mainstream and alternative theatre. Essentially there are two types of acts. The traditional skills like hoops, tumbling and towers are all present and correct and feel entirely fresh given it’s an all-female team (that boob stand, ouchie!). They’re interspersed with comedy-sketches-with-skills: a sort of hybrid which feels uniquely YUCK. True, these could sometimes hit the comedy button harder, but moments like the inside-voice narration of an ariel routine and a ribbon-menstruation dance are properly funny.
YUCK Circus is always going to be bigger than the sum of its parts because of what it represents: this crew isn’t sitting in a corner talking about female representation and empowerment, they’re literally lifting other women up, with a few well-placed swipes at lad culture along the way. That they do it with so much joy is a bonus: they really are irresistible. Feminist circus, you say? Time to get excited.
YUCK Circus, Assembly George Square Gardens, until 25 August, 4.45pm.
