Zac Williams: Jack Goes To Therapy theatre review – Elevated solo work

It’s not easy to carry an hour-long show on your own, with no set, props, costume changes or visual/sound effects. So, hats off to Canadian Zac Williams for writing and performing this one-man piece and keeping us hooked throughout. A semi-autobiographical tale, Jack Goes To Therapy: A (Somewhat) Romantic Comedy (to give it its full title), finds a 29-year-old gay man lost in a sea of heartbreak. His long-term partner has left him for another, and the wedding ring Jack bought for a surprise proposal on their upcoming holiday is burning a hole in his pocket.

Searching solace and advice, he turns to various sources. The nurse at an STI clinic, his best friend, a fellow teacher at the kindergarten where he works, and, eventually, a therapist. Each of these characters is brought vividly to life, plus a slightly unreconstructed male currently sharing Jack’s apartment while his roommate is away. Frequently laugh-out-loud funny, genuinely moving and always interesting, this solo is delivered with such a friendly, off-the-cuff ease, it’s as if Zac/Jack is sitting on our sofa telling us about his day.

Zac Williams: Jack Goes To Therapy, Zoo Playground, until 25 August, 7.20pm.
